چکیده

This study examined production of /b, d, g/ and /p, t, k/ in the initial .position of English and Spanish words by two groups of native Spanish adults and native Spanish 9-10 year-olds who began learning English as a second language (L2) by the age of 5-6 years. It also examined identification by the same subjects of a VaT continuum ranging from /da/ to /ta/. The subjects in all three groups produced /p, t, k/ with significantly longer voice onset time (VaT) values in English than Spanish words, but with significantly shorter VaT values in English words than age-matched English monolinguals. The subjects also realized Spanish /p, t, k/ with significantly shorter VaT values than age-matched Spanish monolinguals. The mean /da/-/ta/ category boundaries of the two groups of adult subjects, but not the child subjects, occurred at significantly shorter mean values than those of age-matched monolingual speakers of English. The results are interpreted to mean that although the native Spanish speakers of English developed phonetic categories for English [ph], [th], and [kh], they did not realize /p, t, k/ authentically because much of their L2 input was likely to have been Spanish-accented English rather than the English spoken by English native speakers.

Linguistic and developmental effects on the production and perception of stop consonants.

This study examined production and perception of the contrast between /t/-/d/ by subjects differing in native language and age. Acoustic analysis revealed that native speakers of English realized word-initial /t/ with significantly longer VOT values (approximately 85 ms) than native speakers of Spanish (approximately 19 ms). Native English and Spanish adults realized /t/ with VOT values that we...

Production and Perceptual Correlates of Spanish-accented English

This study attempted to identify the acoustic deviations in the speech of Spanish-accented speakers of English and their influence on the native perception of accentedness. Recordings of eight multisyllabic target words spoken in sentences by 22 Spanish speakers of English and five native speakers of American English were analyzed for temporal acoustic differences. Acoustic deviations in Spanis...

Production of the word-final English /t/-/d/ contrast by native speakers of English, Mandarin, and Spanish.

The primary aim of this study was to determine if adults whose native language permits neither voiced nor voiceless stops to occur in word-final position can master the English word-final /t/-/d/ contrast. Native English-speaking listeners identified the voicing feature in word-final stops produced by talkers in five groups: native speakers of English, experienced and inexperienced native Spani...

The Pronunciation of the Aspirated Consonants P, T, and K in English by Native Speakers of Spanish and French

This study examines whether explicit phonetic instruction helps Spanish and French speakers more closely approximate native pronunciation of the aspirated variants of the English consonants p, t, and k. The study results indicate that phonetic instruction clearly benefited the subjects, and the findings warrant further investigation. Native speakers of English consistently use aspirated variant...

A Cross-linguistic Study of Korean Laryngeal Stops by the Native Speakers of Chinese, English, Korean, and Spanish

This paper provides the results of an acoustic study of Korean laryngeal stop production by eight adult native speakers each of Mandarin Chinese, American English, Seoul Korean, and Latin American Spanish. Three measurements were taken: f0 (fundamental frequency), VOT (Voice Onset Time), and H1-H2 (the relative amplitude of the first versus the second harmonic of the voice source). The data ind...
